Where Are You Tonight?

Will Oldham recorded as Palace, Palace Brothers, Palace Music, then under his given name, then Bonnie Prince Billy, then Oldham again. You had to keep track, but the songs were good—almost timeless—and with more time on his hands, Oldham’s doing good things. Inside, outside, in between, achy breaking his way through a cover of June Tabor’s “Where Are You Tonight.”

He’s done early John Prine, latter-day Leonard Cohen, requests: “It is the 46th anniversary of the Portuguese revolution tomorrow, People in Portugal will be singing Grândola Vila Morena (the song that was played on the radio to signal the start of the revolution). It would be a fine piece of international solidarity if you could post a cover of it!” Oldham sang the song the next day.
